Our Story

May 19, 2025

Our story begins with our Co-Founder and CEO, Nicholas Sadowski starting a summer internship at the Massachusetts Department of Transportation in the Traffic & Safety group of the Highway Division. Traffic & Safety is dedicated to ensuring compliance with state and federal guidelines as they relate to traffic design.

As part of WPI’s curriculum, students have the opportunity to create their own projects centered around improving their environment. With his experience at MassDOT, Nicholas created a project that focused on improving cities and towns ability to ensure compliance and thereby ensure safety on the roadways they own. Unfortunately, MassDOT’s enforcement is limited to state-managed projects. Due to the complexity and sheer size of the compliance documents that must be followed, cities and towns find it impossible to meet them for all their projects.

Of the alternatives evaluated, a website that could serve as a computer-aided design (CAD) software with built-in compliance checking was chosen. Not only would it be easy for cities and towns to get used to and work with, but it would be accessible and free to the general public, which is a core value of our company. In order to build that application, Nicholas sought the skills of our Chief Technology Officer, Thomas Ricci.

The Intersection Company was officially incorporated in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts for the purpose of realizing the research and concepts developed during the project. In our incorporation documents, we listed specific goals that the company should adhere to: “to work towards increasing safety and usability of the general infrastructure of the United States”, “to, through our products, advocate for equity of use for the general infrastructure of the United States”, and “that although The Intersection Company is not legally a non-profit, the ideals of a non-profit should guide decision making and product pricing decisions.”

The project group formally submitted its report establishing a need for a solution and describing in detail why this is the best solution for this problem. From this point, we have been developing our first Proof of Concept, linked on our homepage!
